La estructura del himno ambrosiano y su relación con las funciones tonales de la escala musical

Abstract

La utilización del himno religioso en Occidente, como una forma de control ideológico frente al avance de las heterodoxias, fue instaurada definitivamente por Ambrosio, obispo de Milán, al conciliar el material himnódico precedente con las necesidades catequísticas que la época le impuso. El episcopus milanés logró concebir un modelo poético, estrófico y rítmico de fácil recepción que funcionaba como instrumento de conversión e instrucción doctrinal y un regulador de las oraciones litúrgicas. El himno ambrosiano no fue, sin embargo, el primero que se ajustó a los principios del credo niceno en la lucha contra diversas formas de herejía, en particular el arrianismo, pero sí fue el primero que innovó desde lo musical y lo rítmico. Su popularidad, basada en su modo "cantable", se cimentó a partir de la novedad de su estructura compositiva, en la que se pueden advertir frecuentes correspondencias métricas y acentuales que posibilitaba una más rápida memorización. A través de esta comunicación se procurará exponer las innovaciones estructurales de la himnodia ambrosiana en materia rítmica, las cuales giran en tomo a la repetición arbitraria del número ocho; asimismo el número ocho contiene funciones temático-emotivas comparables con las funciones tonales de la escala musical y, en especial, el modo jónico que es el que llegó hasta hoy como escala mayor natural.

The use of the religious hymn in the West, as a form of ideological control against the advance of the heterodoxies, was finally established by Ambrosius, bishop of Milan, combining the material of the previous hymn with the needs of catechism that the age imposed upon him. The Milanese episcopus sllcceeded in devising a poetic, strophic and rhythmical model of easy reception that operated as both an instrument of conversion and doctrinal training and the regulator of litllrgical prayers. The Ambrosian hymn was not, however, the first that adjusted to the fundamentals of the Nicean belief in the strllggle against different forms of heresy, especialIy the Arrianism; but it was the first Ílmovative design in musical and rhythmical aspects. Its popularity, based in its calltabilis modus, was strengthened by the nove1ty of its composition, in which frequent correspondences between metre and stress, which made a more rapid memorization possible, may be noticed. This paper will show the structural innovations of the Ambrosian hymnody as regards rhythm, which revolve arollnd the arbitrary repetition of number eight; also the nllmber eight contains thematic-emotive fWlctions, comparable with the tonal functions of the musical scale and, specially, the lonian mode that has come to this day as major natural scale.
